The loaded field includes defending Worlds champions SK Telecom T1, Korean champions ROX Tigers, undefeated Chinese champions EDward Gaming & North American champions Team SoloMid, who look like one of the strongest Western teams ever to lớn enter the field. Two Western teams made the semifinal last year (Fnatic and Origen, both European teams who missed the field this time around), but there has not been a Western finalist since the very first Worlds — a tournament that did not include any Korean or Chinese teams.
The tournament will start with a group stage. Each team will play the other three teams in its group twice in best-of-ones. The top two teams from each group will advance lớn the knockout round, where series will take place over best-of-fives.
The last three Worlds have been won by Korean teams: SK Telecom T1 in 2013, Samsung trắng in năm trước and SK Telecom T1 in 2015. The last non-Korean team lớn win it was the Taipei Assassins in 2012.
